THE PROCESS.
GROUND UP.
The project started with a used sauna sourced secondhand. It was taken apart carefully so the cedar and heater could be salvaged and reused in the new build.
01 - Source / Reclaim
The footprint was cleared, graded, and prepared for the new structure. Base work established the footprint, elevation, and the relationship of the sauna to the rest of the yard.
02 - Site Prep
03 - FRAMING
Framed structure to fit reclaimed material constraints.
Designed around large front window and compact footprint.
04 - Sheathing + Openings
The structure was enclosed and the major openings were refined. This stage moved the project from framing into a weather-protected shell with the front window wall becoming the focal point.
The oversized front window was installed and the shell was refined around it. That opening became the anchor for both the exterior elevation and the interior experience.
05 - WINDOW + SHELL REFINEMENT
06 - INSULATION + INTERIOR PREP
Once the shell was complete, the interior was prepped for heat retention and finish work. Insulation and enclosure details were critical to the performance of the final sauna.
07 - FLOOR SYSTEM + LAYOUT
The floor system and interior layout were developed together. Waterproofing, tile planning, and bench positioning were all driven by the constraints of the space and the salvaged material on hand.
The exterior moved through finish decisions before landing on the final darker cladding and warm soffit contrast. The goal was a compact structure with a more architectural presence than a typical backyard outbuilding.
08 - EXTERIOR EVOLUTION
Reclaimed cedar | large front window | compact footprint—built to fit the space and the function.
